It also improves blood sugar control, which in turn reduces the risk of complications from diabetes and can even reduce the need for blood-sugar-lowering medication. Plus, weight loss improves blood lipid profiles, and that improvement reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke.This graph shows that the risk of developing diabetes increases dramatically as body mass index goes up.This second graph shows that insulin resistance, on average, goes up as the percent of ideal body weight goes up.If you are overweight and you lose weight, then your body is less resistant to insulin, and this can mean a reduced need for blood-sugar-lowering medications.Eating a higher-fiber, lower-fat diet will improve your blood lipids and the likelihood of sustained weight loss. This is because a high-fiber, lowfat diet is more satiating than a diet that is high in fat and refined carbohydrates.
