Food Budget Tips: Lettuce Save Money

FavoriteLoadingAdd to favorites

Save on salad!
Whole heads of red leaf and romaine, that are very robust in size, are about $1.25 in most stores. One head is actually equal to 3 bags in weight (bags are 5 ounces and a head of romaine is about 15 ounces) so this means you will only pay .42 cents a bag of lettuce instead of close to $4 that some stores are now charging if you prepare yourself.

How to make:

  • Cut lettuce on a clean cutting board with a clean sharp knife.
  • Place in a large bowl or pan of water and stir well; allow dirt to sink to bottom.
  • Drain in colander or lettuce spinner.
  • Repeat as needed to remove dirt.
  • Chill and store in bag with holes in the bottom.
