3 Kale Cooking Tips

Have you seen the kale trivia we explored last week? Today we're taking the fun to the next level with 3 simple tips to help your clients make the best of their introduction (or reintroduction) to this hearty green vegetable.

Tips #1: Slice It Thin! Perhaps you've heard of "massaging" kale -- the act of rubbing olive oil or a light dressing into kale leaves before serving them raw. This process definitely softens the leaves, but we've found that if you devein the leaves thoroughly and slice the kale very thinly, you can skip this time-consuming and somewhat intimidating step and go right to serving your salad instead.

This tip also helps your kale cook faster yet remain tender.

Tip #2: Take Baby Steps If you're just starting to introduce kale into your eating pattern, it might be worth beginning with a box of baby kale. These leaves are the tenderest and least bitter, which can be a great way to get used to the flavor profile of kale without getting overwhelmed by it. Try mixing a handful of baby kale leaves with other salad greens.

Tip #3: Give it a Whirr-l! Another way to introduce kale into your eating pattern is through green smoothies. Tasty tropical fruits can mask the flavor of kale and whirling it in the blender makes the texture perfect. Try combining 1 and 1/2 cups water, 1 cup frozen fruit like mango or pineapple and 1/2 cup fresh fruit like blueberries or pitted cherries with 4 cups of washed kale leaves. Whirr in a high-powered blender for at least 1 minute or until your desired consistency is reached.
